Maybe the trip started because it was time to paint the plane. That building you poured your soul into may be nearing completion. Or, you might want to remove some initials that you want to forget.
Aircraft N Numbers
Whatever the reason, if you want to change your US Aircraft Registration Number (N Number), even if you're covered by the FAA, it pays to plan ahead. You're not the only one trying to celebrate your milestones or that special day. Even the big boys have a meaning for special N numbers. Looking for something ending in JB? N Number Reservation
If you know the letters or numbers you want to remember, you also need to understand the rules.
With these rules in hand, you can generate a list of N numbers that match your goals. With this list you can start researching what is available on the FAA website.
You need to reserve an N number before assigning and painting the aircraft. It costs only $10 to reserve an N number for one year through the FAA website. You can renew your reservation every year if you choose. However, requesting a reservation from the Site does not guarantee a reservation. Requests are processed in order of receipt and other requests may be processed for the same N number. After reservation, the FAA will send a confirmation letter to the applicant. An update will also be provided before the expiry date.
With your unique reservation number in hand, you are free to change the registration number of your flight. You will need to submit a letter to the FAA requesting that your aircraft be assigned a different number. This letter should include:
Records Of The Skies: Obtaining Airplane Records
The letter must be signed by the owner of the ink, including a typed or typed name and a name if applicable. It also helps to have a current phone number and mailing address. If you are requesting a reserved N number, you must include a $10 appointment fee.
If you like surprises, you can also complete the process in one step. You can request an N number and an assignment for $20 per letter ($10 for N number request, $10 for assignment). In addition to the above information, your letter should list the received and available N numbers (when you search). The FAA's Flight Registration Branch will scan the number in the order you list it and issue the first N number to confirm it is available for change. No.
If the N number change is approved, the FAA will send the aircraft owner an Assignment of Special Registration Number, AC Form 8050-64, in triplicate to authorize the stop. A new registration number will be taken on the flight.
You are now allowed to change the N number on your flight. However, your duties do not end with the paint gun. Within five days of placing the new registration number on the aircraft, the owner must complete and issue AC Form 8050-64 indicating the date the new registration number was placed on the aircraft. and return the original AC Form 8050-64 to the FAA Aviation Registry at the address shown on Form 8050-64.

As the temporary authority to operate the aircraft under the new N number until the flight registration certificate appears, you need to carry a second copy of AC Form 8050-64 along with the aircraft registration certificate and AC Form 8050-3. New N number found.
If you wish to revert to your old N number in the future, you have the option to save the old number that has just been released. Airline by requesting this in writing at any time during the N Number change process. And, you guessed it, be sure to include another $10.
Another thing: practice saying your new N number 100 times out loud, then go to sleep before you make your final decision. This is the beginning of a wonderful new relationship between you and your airplane, and don't take it for granted. Happy flying!

As explained here, military aircraft often display a number along with other markings on the tail or fuselage of the aircraft. However, military numbers are not the same as FAA tail numbers on American aircraft that begin with the letter "N".
Do military planes also have an "N" number, or do American planes not have an "N" number?
The 'N' numbers you refer to are FAA registration numbers. The FARs (Federal Regulations) specifically state that registration is not required for military aircraft:
Yellow And Black
(b) No person eligible for registration under 49 USC 44101-44104 shall operate an aircraft, except an aircraft— (1) registered by the owner; (2) holds a temporary permit as required by §47.31(c); or (3) a military aircraft
The FAA issues these registrations in accordance with its obligations under the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation, which (in Article 20) requires:
However, the US specifically requires registration of all qualified aircraft unless it is a military aircraft or has a temporary approval under 14 CFR 47.31(c), per 14 CFR 47.3 noted above.
As explained by @reirab, the "N" registration number is usually used for civil aircraft. However, there are some notable exceptions.

The de Havilland DHC-7 (variously designated Dash-7, O-5A, EO-5B/C, or RC-7B) is used by the US military as an aerial photography model.
Dover AFB's 436th Force Support Squadron employs several Cessnas in their Aero Club, which are used for flight training. One of them made news when it suddenly appeared on a local highway.
This is just the beginning. By generating search information, you can also find hundreds of other aircraft listed in the FAA database.
These are all special aircraft without weapons or other weapons (without smoke / fire like the Dash 7).

Although it is not military-specific (yet), it is common for development aircraft to be assigned civilian registration numbers during flight tests. Not submitted yet. This KC-46A model, painted mostly in military "livery", has the registration number N461FT.

If you'll excuse the pun, what is 4-1-1 among N-numbers? How are they hired on planes? What happens to numbers and letters? Some planes only have numbers. Some have numbers and letters. Most planes seem to have five letters after the "N," but I saw a plane on the road the other day that only had four. What can you tell me?
I have seen N-numbers of 5 in my air travel and thought current rules required it. However, as I understand from your question, there are many possibilities. About a million possibilities.
4-1-1 in numbers: Currently, the US registration number for civil aircraft is the letter "N" followed by your choice of one of the following: one to three numbers followed by two letters or one to four numbers plus one letter or one to five numbers.
Aircraft Maintenance: Custom N Numbers
The plane the POTUS currently travels in is usually one of the twin presidential Boeing VC-25 planes (the military's 747). Being military aircraft, they do not have N-numbers.
In a particular case, even though single-digit numbers and two-digit N-numbers are allowed, we cannot find one of them. N-1 is the FAA's Gulfstream IV "Spirit of America".
Personally, I think they should have given N-99 to the Ninety-Nineties and let us play rock-paper-scissors as to who gets the right to N-1.
But if you're a little guy, you get a number and a letter. Less, but what about five? You will get a three digit N number. Or a number and two letters. Or like it
