Aircraft Tours - Airline tour operators in the United States operate sightseeing flights from Bar Harbor, Maine to Maui and from Key West to northern Alaska. Dave Genet, owner of St. Augustine Biplane Rides in St. Augustine, Florida (KSGJ), founded his company in 2012 with the goal of using historic aircraft - currently a 1935 Cabin Waco YOC - to offer aerial views of North America's oldest city. "Not only are you flying in a time machine, but you're flying over one of the most historic places in the United States, so it's a perfect game," says Genet.

Commercial air travel by powered aircraft that remain within 25 statute miles of home airports is conducted under Part 91 rules and requires an FAA Authorization (LOA) authorizing their operation. Participation in the DOT's drug and alcohol testing program is a key requirement for approval. "Anyone who touches or flies a key aircraft must be involved in a testing program," says Genet. Where applicable, national park airspace rules must be followed (eg Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in downtown St. Augustine).

There is no academic training or degree program for the air travel business. Motor aircraft pilots must hold a commercial license and have extensive experience flying the type of aircraft, as well as excellent people skills. "Half the people are kind of intimidated" about flying a small plane, Genet notes, and they need to be at ease with the pilot. When the customers are in the air, I try to let them enjoy the experience as far as the role of the guide is concerned, says Genet. "You don't have to talk all the time."

There is a demand for goods and things worth seeing from the air. St. Augustine has a population of less than 14,000, but it attracts between 1 million and 4 million visitors a year, according to Genet, according to different numbers. Airport support is also important. (An operating agreement and payment of fees are required.) The airport location must be in a commercial operations zone and strictly comply with the security rules governing customer access to the airport.

Operators usually offer different tours, and prices depend on the time of year. "My average flight is $184 for two people for 22 minutes," says Genet. "It's a great price," he says. "People pay $90 for a night walk." The type of aircraft and even fuel prices also affect the cost of travel. If it weren't for SGJ's low fuel prices, it would have to raise its rates, says Genet.

"It's a mix - you can only have one medium," says Genet. Advertised in local circulars and entertainment magazines. Postcard-sized cards at hotel kiosks work well, but are expensive. The best exposure is through social media, such as positive comments on Facebook and TripAdvisor, although Genet says he never asks clients to post. Due to the increased cost of jet fuel, there is a temporary fuel surcharge of $15.00 per seat and will be charged at check-in. The Dutch airline KLM offers a free virtual tour experience on their aircraft. He has been collecting footage for some time and every model aircraft in his fleet is available for viewing.

The 360° camera photos were collected and compiled by VR expert Chris Koomen from the KLM digital studio. The result is a flawless view of the interior of every compartment of every aircraft.

Prospective customers can see the cabins, all class seats and even the cockpit where the pilot sits! The experience currently extends to the company's smallest jet, the Embraer 175 and Cityhopper, with A330s, B737s, B777s, B747s, B787 Dreamliners and even the latest B787-10s. There are 14 VR rides in total, each covering different configurations and versions.

In a recent blog post, KLM explained that the service was initially aimed at their staff and then opened to the public. The original purpose of the "successful experiment" was to allow cleaners and flight attendants to familiarize themselves with the aircraft before going to work, so that they could do their work faster and better.

We wanted to familiarize the cleaners on the aircraft – the B787 – before its first flight to Minneapolis. They were supposed to come in the evening to clean the plane after it arrived, but they still hadn't seen this man from inside. We knew it would take a lot of extra time. And that's why we found a solution. During the day, members of the cleaning team had the opportunity to take a virtual tour on an iPad, using a VR headset, to be well prepared when they arrived for the evening cleaning of the aircraft. It was an experiment, but it was immediately successful. Unbelievable! They ended up clearing fifteen minutes early, and to top it off, they didn't make a single mistake. A view from above and from the front – they had to settle for that. They will be better prepared now.

If you want to take a tour and see places on board that you can't go to as a passenger - like the gallery, the cockpit and maybe business class - here's a link to every KLM virtual plane:
