Techniques for urban camouflage development have varied over time. In 1990, the US Army Natick Research, Development and Engineering Center (now the Soldier Combat Capability Development Command Center) analyzed individual terrain samples from rubble piles to stucco through the Terrain Analysis System (TAS). From these samples, TAS collected spectrophotometric data to determine the most prominent colors. This was known as a "clustering" procedure, where pixels from the scene were grouped by color into "domains".
