Small Army Helicopter - The US Army's elite squadron of A/MH-6 "Little Bird" special operations helicopters could give way to civilian helicopters in the coming years.
The military can trade Little Birds, which the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment has used for nearly 40 years, for the winner of a new armed reconnaissance helicopter competition. The chasing? Only one of the two competing helicopters can carry troops, a major requirement to replace Little Bird.

In 1981, following a failed mission to rescue American hostages in Tehran, the US military formed Task Force 160, an elite helicopter unit designed to support special forces ground units. The unit received its first A/MH-6 helicopters in 1983; Since then, "Little Bird" has continuously served in the aviation unit. Small, nimble helicopters fly low to camouflage themselves and avoid enemy fire.

This armed helicopter will focus on flight and reconnaissance capabilities. The Army will choose the winner from two aircraft, the Sikorsky Raider X and the Bell 360 Invictus, in 2024.

Raider X includes a cargo/passenger compartment behind the cockpit capable of carrying troops or weapons. This makes it suitable to replace the A/MH-6, although it is a larger aircraft.
Both Raider X and Invictus will likely work well as AH-6 replacements. The problem is that the MH-6 is a troop transport and while the Raider X has a passenger compartment for up to six soldiers, the Invictus is not capable of carrying those passengers during the journey.
The Raider X will reportedly replace the squadron A/MH-6 if it wins the FARA competition, but a lack of passenger space means the Army will have to look elsewhere if Invictus wins. That solution could be a heavily modified airliner. Developing an entirely new military aircraft isn't really an option, as the A/MH-6 fleet has only 51 aircraft.
Another possibility is that the Army simply asks aircraft manufacturer Boeing to develop a fourth-generation A/MH-6. Boeing advertises the newly built little birds on its website, and the Block III aircraft uses a completely new airframe. However, the Army wanted to move away from the 1960s airframe, which it believed was maximized from a design perspective.
