Directions To Tennessee Border - When I was a kid, WDEF-TV called their newscast the Tri-State Report. I've always liked this name, it's self-explanatory. People like me living in the northeast corner of Alabama get news from Chattanooga just like my neighbors in northwest Georgia, just a hop and a skip away. Somehow, over the years, the term "Tri-State Area" was changed to "Tennessee Valley," though I don't know who made that decision. I think it seemed more tourist friendly.
However, I am proud of our three neighboring states. I like something about all of them. However, until the end of 2015, the thought of being in all three states at the same time never occurred to me. I think somewhere in the back of my head I understood that there was a border where three states joined. I never tried to find out exactly where it was until now. My friend Bill Peterson told me I should take a walk. He just returned from a field trip where he found a marker pointing to the exact spot where Alabama meets Georgia and Tennessee. He was kind enough to send his story and the stories of other explorers who made the trip.
Where Is Townsend?
As you know, a few years ago there was renewed interest in the Tennessee-Georgia border. Some Georgia lawmakers argued that the state line was drawn incorrectly, too far south. This was done in 1818 by James Camack. He was a surveyor hired by the state of Georgia to settle a dispute over state boundaries. (Georgia became a state in 1788, while Tennessee gained statehood eight years later.) Camac, of course, used primitive equipment. As surveyor Bart Cretty told NPR in 2008, people in the 1800s used "the sky and the stars" to mark a line.
There seems to be little doubt among modern experts that the marker is about a mile from the 35th parallel, which by statute is the true line. They say it must be right in the middle of Nikajak Lake.

For example, in 2013, Georgia state legislators said that a true border line would allow Georgians to claim abundant water supplies in Tennessee. Despite protests and some well-researched evidence that seems to prove them right, the state line has not moved. It is obvious that the courts are reluctant to move state boundaries that have existed for two hundred years. As Inspector Cretty told NPR, "God, if you started changing property lines, it would just be chaos."
