Directions To Quantico Virginia - I kept my FBI credentials (with a RETIRED stamp in bold red letters) in my backpack and turned in my license, as did the forty plus year members of the Citizens Academy in Philadelphia, CA that I was with. Each of our names was checked against a pre-screened list of participants. With no prior permission, the bus driver was prevented from entering and escorted off campus as he dropped us off in front of the impressive reception area. Security was tight.

The campus map gave me a quick update on how much the academy has expanded since I attended the new agent training many, many years ago. I've been to Quantico twice before, in 2006 and 2007, but before the recent renovations. So when I heard that the Philadelphia Division was sponsoring a trip to the FBI Academy for CA graduates, I asked if I could join. Thanks Tanya!

When our group entered the main building (actually several buildings connected by "mouse-like" corridors), we were introduced to our tour guide, Josh, the community outreach specialist whose job it was to keep the schedule. Unfortunately, but understandably, we didn't have time to see the renovated dormitory rooms. Josh said the rooms are still two suites with two double beds and a shared bathroom for four same-sex partners. National Academy participants live in one of the higher annexes, and new agents live in the other. I photographed the well-kept yard between the two buildings. We could not see the classrooms, the enlarged and decorated auditorium and reception area of the ceremonial hall. It was a tight schedule. maybe next time.

To become a member of the potential club, agents must achieve a perfect score within a strict deadline, as outlined in the Prime Firearms Guide (PFI).
As we walked down the corridor past the main armory, with weapon displays on the walls, I found some familiar names among the members of the Opportunity Club (Elite Shooter). Bill Vanderpool, Max Noel, James Gagliano and Mike Harrigan were all guests of the FBI Retired Case Review. Outside of the shooting ranges, we watched the shooting of new FBI Agent Trainees (NATs) and DEA recruits. FBI drills wear blue t-shirts and brown tactical pants, while DEA drills wear black. The DEA Forensic Training Center is also located on the FBI Academy campus. The agency uses the FBI's firing ranges and mess hall. With hundreds of live shots being fired within earshot, we didn't hang around the range for long.

After that, we visited the athletics building. As I passed the entrance to the Yellow Brick Road runway, I made sure to snap a picture of the tree made famous in the opening scene of Clarice Starling.
. I was surprised when Josh told us that the interns were no longer running on Hoover Street, but were using the track outside the fitness center. She also told us that NATs still practice boxing and martial arts against male opponents. I remember how fun it was (just kidding).
Our next stop was Hogan's Alley, a crazy little town with shops (including a real Subway where the workers can buy sandwiches), a motel, a theater and the most robbed bank in America. This is where NATs apply what they learn in the classroom. Actors from nearby Fredericksburg, Virginia, are hired to play the roles of victims, villains and innocent bystanders in practical scenarios designed to gauge the trainee's progress, arrest and interview skills.
After lunch in the newly renovated dining hall and a stop at the FBI store where CA members could purchase shopping bags full of FBI paraphernalia and jewelry (I picked up a few things for future gifts), we took a bus to FBI World - the famous FBI World. FBI lab. I was excited to welcome back my former colleague in the Philadelphia office, Supervising Special Agent (SSA) Richard Marks, who gave a fascinating talk on forensics and evidence collection (he hasn't retired yet, but I have to put him on the podcast). Attending the trip was a nostalgic walk down memory lane.

If you arrive at MCB Quantico during regular business hours, report to the Installation Personnel Management Center located on the second deck of the 2006 Hawkins Boulevard building. IPAC can be reached at 1 (703) 784-4479. IPAC assists with initial administrative check-in matters, including crew record updates, original booking confirmations, travel requests, unit log matters and welcome on board briefings.
After Marines complete the IPAC sign-in process, they are transferred to their assigned battalion or company headquarters to receive their sign-in sheets and other processing activities.
